La Divina Commedia
This series revisits Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy through the visionary imagery of Gustave Doré, whose celebrated cycle of engravings was published between 1861 and 1868. Each scene is reconstructed by hand using verses from the canto it portrays. Dante’s original Italian text gathers into figures, light and shadow, preserving the dramatic intensity and monumental atmosphere of Doré’s compositions. Word and image become inseparable: the poem itself gives substance to Dante’s journey through the realms of the afterlife.
