An evolving body of work in which handwriting moves beyond portraiture to explore emotional states, inner experience and shared vulnerability. Drawing on poetry, literature and music, each piece transforms an existing text into a visual space where words become bodies, gestures and fragments of human experience. Though rooted in individual stories, these works reflect on emotions that remain deeply personal yet universally recognisable: solitude, silence, endurance and the need for connection.

This series revisits Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy through the visionary imagery of Gustave Doré, whose celebrated cycle of engravings was published between 1861 and 1868. Each scene is reconstructed by hand using verses from the canto it portrays. Dante’s original Italian text gathers into figures, light and shadow, preserving the dramatic intensity and monumental atmosphere of Doré’s compositions. Word and image become inseparable: the poem itself gives substance to Dante’s journey through the realms of the afterlife.

This series pays tribute to John Tenniel’s iconic illustrations for the first edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865. Each scene is reimagined through the original English text of the chapter in which it unfolds. Carroll’s words trace the figures, gestures and atmosphere of Tenniel’s drawings, allowing image and narrative to emerge from the same source. Here, handwriting becomes a passage into Wonderland: the story does not simply accompany the illustration—it gives it form.

In this series, each author is portrayed through their own words. Excerpts drawn from their literary works — always preserved in the original language — shape the features, shadows and expression of the face. Handwriting becomes both image and voice, revealing the writer through the language they left behind. Selected works from the series belong to the permanent collection of the Alessandro Cialdi Library in Civitavecchia, Italy.

Each subject emerges through words connected to their life and work: lyrics, writings and fragments of thought become line, texture and shadow. Handwriting transforms their creative legacy into a visual presence, revealing not only a recognisable face, but the voice and ideas that made it iconic.

A curated selection of commissioned works now held in private collections. Created from personal photographs, memories and meaningful texts, each calligram translates an individual story into a one-of-a-kind artwork. Drawn entirely by hand, these portraits explore the intimate relationship between words, identity and memory.
